Embracing Change for a More Graceful Menopause

Virginia Prior, L.AcThe gradual decline in ovarian function known as menopause or "the change" is potentially one of the most powerful transformations a woman can possibly go through. This climacteric stage can be a pinnacle experience for deep understanding, as well as a way to tap into a woman's inherent power.

Throughout this process, women begin weeding through a multitude of information being thrown at them, teaching them to listen to their intuition, their gut feelings, before deciding which path is best to take. They can choose from artificial hormone therapy, natural menopause and everything in between. But this ability to tune in to our "higher" self, to really hear our own voice, allows us to become stronger and more intelligent women - wise women.

If life is all about finding our personal truth and, ultimately, "knowing thyself", then this life-changing time can help women find a new identity, one potentially more vital and perhaps even more important than their previous self.

With labels such as "estrogen deficiency", "ovarian failure" and "vaginal atrophy", menopause is erroneously viewed as a disease (rather than a process). With the combination of our American diet and stress, along with a lack of support and a fear of aging, many women are tortured by their hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, depression, fatigue and the sense of loss.

However, when menopause is viewed as a rebirth or a metamorphosis, a woman has the opportunity to let go of her past; she can find more energy for herself and her own personal creativity. She will stand up for what is right, speak courageously and freely, teaching other young women what they have learned. This passing on of information will form a foundation for a future rooted in sharing women's wisdom. Some of this wisdom will include techniques for surviving (and thriving!) during this important time.

It is interesting to note that in certain cultures, women cannot be considered shamans until they pass through this transitional phase, signifying the complete transformation into their wisest self.

Successfully moving through menopause requires the ability to view it as a rite of passage, focusing on the freedom and power that comes from a sense of completion and embracing one's true self. It also helps to have the support of family members and loved ones who understand that menopausal symptoms simply reflect temporary imbalances. An intact support system will help a woman move more gracefully through this time when she feels most raw and vulnerable, often more thin-skinned and weepy than ever.

Understanding that menopause is a gradual change, made easier with correct diet and lifestyle choices, will help women stay grounded during turbulent times and during times of increased hot-flashing and sweating. Choosing acupuncture and herbal remedies reflects proper self-care and helps this important transition happen much more smoothly.
